Staff FAQ's
The following are questions that potential staff are frequently asking us.
1. How good are my chances of being accepted as a staff member?
Camp Walden employs about 175 students each summer. Your chances of being accepted depends upon what jobs are available at the time you apply. Obviously those who have been staff at Walden in previous summers get first choice. The more experience you have working with children, and in the different specialty areas we have, the more likelihood of your being accepted. You are urged to get your application in as soon as possible.
2. How long is the camp season?
It runs from the last week in June until the third week of August. A total of about 8 weeks - 7 of which are with the campers in attendance - and about 5 days of Pre-Camp for training and getting everything ready.
3. Are there jobs available before the campers arrive?
Yes. Camp Walden is rented out from the end of May until Pre-Camp starts, at the end of June. Various school boards from around the province use our facility. We hire a number of college and university students for this extra time in addition to the regular camping season. In addition, there may also be some jobs for a week or two after the regular camp is over.
4. How are salaries determined?
Camp Walden salaries are competitive, and in many cases higher than other camps. Your salary depends upon the position you obtain, as well as your experience. There are no deductions for room and board at camp. They are given to you.
5. What are the other benefits of working at camp for the summer?
a) Some colleges and universities give partial credit for camp work, particularly if you are in a recreation or outdoor education program. Check with you department.
b) A chance to meet new friends from all over North America as well as from foreign countries.
c) Helping contribute to the development of young people.
d) A great environment in which to spend the summer.
e) A chance to use all your skills and abilities - both athletic and social.
f) It looks great on a resume - more and more potential employers call us for references. It seems that the social skills an development that goes on in a camp setting are extremely useful to human resources personnel in their hiring.
6. How do days off work?
All camp staff are given 6 days off during the 7 weeks that campers are in attendance. Days off are 24 hours in length.
