About the Walden CD
Singing and camp have gone together since Walden opened in the summer of 1970. At its best, group singing represents the unity, spirit, fun, friendship, and just plain feeling good that the "sing-song" experience gives to so many campers.
Walden's founder, Ted Cole, Passed the Music On for over 35 years at Walden. Here are his thoughts about the music and its role in our Walden family.
I believe that singing is as important to the over-all camp program as any other activity. I also believe that young people should be exposed to as many different kinds of music as possible. With these beliefs firmly entrenched, I will continue to expand my own repertoire, as well as teaching and introducing lots of new songs and music to Walden.
To those of you who will becoming to Walden for the first time; here is an opportunity to learn some of our songs before you arrive at camp. For those who have already been Walden campers or staff; here are a few more memories for you to hold onto.
Here it is - done in one take only, with all its spirit, enthusiasm, serious moments, singing off key, clapping, whistling, shouting, singing too quickly (or playing too slowly) and just a plain good time.
Walden CD Song Listing
Disc One: The Big Sing
1. PASS THE MUSIC ON (John McCutcheon, Tom Chapin) (3:22)
When I first heard this song, I felt that it had been written for me. Those who know me well, feel that it's almost biographical.
2. MARCHING TO PRETORIA (Traditional) (2:48)
A South African song from the late 1800's.
3. GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN (Traditional) (4:14)
A song with many versions that probably had its origin as a spiritual.
4. MICHAEL ROW THE BOAT ASHORE (Traditional) (4:11)
A song originally from the West Indies.
5. RISE AND SHINE (Traditional) (2:45)
This is still a great song to get the day going.
6. GREEN GRASS GREW ALL AROUND (Traditional) (5:09)
One of a group of songs with lots of verses and speed.
7. IF I HAD A HAMMER (Pete Seeger) (2:38)
A Walden Favorite. It's been recorded in every conceivable style from country to rock. We sing it here the way Pete Seeger originally recorded it.
8. I'VE BEEN WORKING ON THE RAILROAD (Traditional) (2:34)
A real hit with younger campers.
9. MY OLD MAN (Unknown) (2:15)
A crazy song that I love to sing.
10. GREEN GROW THE RUSHES (Traditional) (5:27)
A great song filled with elements of both the Old and New Testaments - originated in England.
11. GARBAGE (Bill Steele) (3:26)
A newer breed of song to fit our contemporary world.
12. FOR OUR HANDS ARE STRONG (Unknown) (2:31)
This was taught to Walden in 1970 and we've been singing it ever since.
13. THE GARDEN SONG - INCH BY INCH (Dave Mallett) (4:24)
An environmental song. It's been one of Walden's greatest hits since we learned it.
14. THIS IS YOUR LAND (Woody Guthrie) (2:49)
Probably North America's best known and loved folk song.
15. "W" - THAT'S THE WAY IT BEGINS (Honickman, Brown) (3:46)
Walden's first camp song - written for us by Howie Honickman and Jeff Brown - two of our original staff.
Disc Two: By The Campfire
1. CIRCLE GAME (Joni Mitchell)
One of the most beautiful and meaningful songs about growing up ever written.
2. WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE (Pete Seeger)
One of the many songs of peace that came out of the 1960’s.
3. 4 STRONG WINDS (Ian Tyson)
It has been recorded by artists too numerous to mention. It’s been one of my favourites for years.
4. PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON (Yarrow, Lipton)
Another great song about make believe and growing up.
5. BLOWING IN THE WIND (Bob Dylan)
I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t know this Bob Dylan Classic. It stands the test of time.
6. LEAVING ON A JET PLANE (John Denver)
One of his most popular songs. It’s been re-released recently to a new generation of young people.
7. CIRCLE CIRCLE (Harry Chapin)
By the late Harry Chapin – who was a master at weaving stories in song – I’ve added an additional verse.
8. YOU DON'T KNOW (Unknown)
Another song about growing up. It says a lot of things very simply. It’s been one of my personal choices for years – and was taught to me by an old friend – Canadian Folklorist – Shelly Posen.
9. 30 YEARS (Paul Stock, Ted Cole)
Written for our 25th anniversary. We add a number each year.
10. THE WALDEN SONG (Zubata, Shustak)
Written by two campers in our first year, 1970. They used Joni Mitchell’s – Circle Game – as the tune – and expressed their feelings about Walden. This is what we sing to end each summer at camp.
11. CAMPFIRE (Traditional)
I learned the second verse of this song when I was about 12 years old at camp. I have never been able to find the origin. I added the first and third verses. To anyone who has ever sat quietly around a campfire – you will know only too well the feelings expressed.

Countdown to 2011...
The summer of 2010 has come to an end. All of camp's busses arrived in Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto safely. There were very few things left behind at camp and at the pick-up locations.
The summer ended with the same passion and excitement that it started with. Although campers were looking forward to seeing their parents, there were lots of tears shed on the last night …more
